Learner:  Katara and Eric   Learning Coach:  Miriam Kamsteeg            Date: Weeks 7-10, Term 4, 2015
Learning Area: iExperience
Learning Observed
This iExperience involved turning “Trash” into something “Flash”. They started with a piece of cardboard and had to create a photo frame to for their superhero photo. We had lots of scraps of cardboard, cellophane, tissue paper, wool and fabric bits for the Learners to use to create this.
Evidence of learning

They have used “trash” to create this frame. Isn’t it starting to look flash!
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
They are developing their CURIOSITY by thinking about what scraps would be good to cut up to put on their frame (THINKING). They had to work by themselves and ensure that they got everything finished in time (MANAGING SELF).
Next Learning Steps
  • What else is “trash” that I could create into something “flash”?
  • Ensure I have glued everything down properly and painted all the parts thoroughly.
  • Share learning with home.

iExplore- Cubism

Learner:   Eric      Learning Coach:   Luisa Maloni        Date: 18th September, 2015
Learning Area: iExplore: Visual Art: Cubism
Learning Observed
We have been learning about the art movement Cubism. We have looked at many examples of cubism and have created our own studies using the cubist style. Eric used the elements of shape and fracture to create a study of a tree and a painting. Eric used shape to define the different areas of his tree study i.e. the trunk, the leaves and the background and experimented with mixing colours for his work. He then looked at images on the internet to choose an artistic exemplar he was interested in trying. Eric is interested in using superheroes as the subject for his final work.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Eric demonstrates the Vision principles of Curiosity in continually experimenting with and searching for new ideas in cubism, Capability in executing bold and expressive artworks and Connected in connecting with what other artists are doing within the art style of Cubism. He uses the Key Competencies of Thinking as he develops his own creativity as well as follow an inquiry process.
Next Learning Steps

  • Use new language to describe his artworks e.g. shape, fracture, hues, shades
  • Describe what he has learned and say what his next steps are

During the programme the learners focus on developing their fine motor control and work towards accurate shape formation and position. As we have progressed with this learning Eric has developed his ability to accurately form the shapes and is able to identify the shapes we have completed when asked. Since beginning he has increased the number of letters and shapes he is correctly forming. Eric has completed tall stick (l) and is currently working towards accurate formation of open mouth (c) .
Evidence of learning

Narrative Assessment - Visual Arts

Learner: Eric                    Learning Coach: Abby Morgan             Date: 23 April 2015
Learning Area: Arts - Visual
Learning Observed
Today Eric was introduced to Piet Mondrian, an influential artist of the early 20th century who used squares and rectangles to effectively create vivid pieces of art. We began by exploring Piet’s original pieces of art that were of a very different style - realist landscape. Eric was shown three of Piet’s original images and asked his thoughts or feelings about them. He was able to verbalise his thinking and shared this with the group. Following this we moved to discussing and then creating our own Piet art. After we began I noticed Eric kept getting up to look at the images on the TV. I enquired as to what he was looking at, to which he told me he was trying to recreate a specific piece of Piet (Image below). I gave Eric the iPad to use to guide his work. Eric spent time carefully recreating the art below. He ensured the shapes were correct and in the correct location and that the colours correctly correspond. I wonder what other artists Eric may enjoy studying?
Evidence of learning
Eric was able to follow the design principles of Piet Mondrian as he replicated the piece above.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During this Art session Eric was develop the key competencies of managing self and thinking. He was able to apply his new knowledge to the learning task given as well as being able to verbally share his ideas about the art. Eric demonstrated his ability to be a resilient learner as he attempted new concepts.
Next Learning Steps
  • Develop concepts about space and proportion
  • Introduce other artists such as Nancy Rourke who also use the concept of colour blocking
