As part of developing learners ability to write we are learning the shapes and symbols of the Casey the Caterpillar programme. During the programme the learners focus on developing their fine motor control and work towards accurate shape formation and position. As we have progressed with this learning Eric has developed his ability to accurately form the shapes and is able to identify the shapes we have completed when asked. Since beginning he has increased the number of letters and shapes he is correctly forming. Eric has completed tall stick (l) and is currently working towards accurate formation of open mouth (c) .

Today Eric was introduced to Piet Mondrian, an influential artist of the early 20th century who used squares and rectangles to effectively create vivid pieces of art. We began by exploring Piet’s original pieces of art that were of a very different style - realist landscape. Eric was shown three of Piet’s original images and asked his thoughts or feelings about them. He was able to verbalise his thinking and shared this with the group. Following this we moved to discussing and then creating our own Piet art. After we began I noticed Eric kept getting up to look at the images on the TV. I enquired as to what he was looking at, to which he told me he was trying to recreate a specific piece of Piet (Image below). I gave Eric the iPad to use to guide his work. Eric spent time carefully recreating the art below. He ensured the shapes were correct and in the correct location and that the colours correctly correspond. I wonder what other artists Eric may enjoy studying?
